Aging Brain and Muscles discussion

You learned about the muscular and nervous systems in this unit, and how the brain is responsible for regulating both voluntary and involuntary movement of the muscular system. Both of these systems decline in function as we age. But does a decline in muscular function lead to a decline in brain function, or vice versa? Scientists at the University of Geneva carried out a study where they examined that question!

Read a summary of the article from Science Daily: Brain or muscles, what do we lose first?

In your well-developed discussion post, begin by interpreting the findings of the study. What did the researchers discover? How can this information be used “on the ground” in hospitals, nursing homes, or assisted living facilities to help prevent decline in cognitive and physical abilities after age 50?

Next, review how the study was carried out. Do you believe that this is an informative method to test the research question? Design and propose a follow-up study to support or challenge the results of the initial study. Consider sample size, time frame, your research procedure and methods, and the type of data you would collect. If you are stuck, you may want to explore this web page about Research Designs.

Comment on at least one other group member’s post and provide helpful feedback regarding their study. What do you like about it? What could be improved?
