Development of the Self
Stories like Danielle’s from our reading are unfortunately scattered throughout history. One of the most famous cases of an isolated, or confined, child was of Genie Wiley. Social scientists, primarily sociologists and psychologists, are captivated by cases like these because they represent experiments that are unethical to conduct. After watching the clip on Genie Wiley and reading about Danielle, use one of the ways of developing into the self (looking-glass self, Mead’s stages of development, etc.) to analyze what aspects of socialization and developing into the self were missing from the girls’ development.
