When using medical terms, it is important to choose the appropriate words based on the audience. Healthcare professionals address a condition keeping in mind that the goal is for the recipient to understand what is being said. The usage of medical jargons and/or layman’s terms will be selected based on that audience.

Activity Instructions

Rewrite each sentence below, using your own words and keeping in mind the given audience.

Using APA format, provide at least one citation for this exercise.

Sentences for Review:

Sentence: Asthma affects many children. It is a chronic inflammatory disease.

Audience: The parents of an 8-year-old girl who has recently been diagnosed with asthma.

Sentence: The patient has bilateral pneumonia. She will need to be admitted to the ICU.

Audience: An 85-year-old woman with dementia and her caretaker who is a nurse.

Sentence: Bronchodilators are best given by inhalation but can be used orally or intravenously.

Audience: A 25-year-old athlete with severe exercise-induced asthma

Grading and Assessment
